The use of technology in health care has a rich history, dating back to 1906 when Wilhelm Einthoven recorded the first electrocardiogram [Britannica, 2023]. Nearly 100 years later, the term E-health was introduced into scientific disciplines as Gunther Eysenbach defined the concept as the use of information and communication technologies to support healthcare delivery [Uribe-Toril & Ruiz-Real, 2021]. The late 1990s saw the advent of counselling services where mental health professionals began offering real-time chat sessions and email exchanges as an alternative to traditional face-to-face therapy, opening up possibilities of reaching individuals who faced certain barriers to accessing health care. The influence of Covid-19 pandemic cannot be ignored in the expansion and widespread adoption of E-Health and E-Therapy as video conferencing platforms became more sophisticated, enabling therapists to perform virtual sessions which closely resembled in-person interventions. Additionally, E-Therapy platforms and mental health apps have emerged in the last decade providing users with on-the-go support and the ability to connect with a licensed therapist from the palm of their hand.
Teletherapeutic approaches, particularly using cognitive behavioural methodologies, have been found to be effective in the treatment of disorders such as depression and anxiety [Varela-Moreno et al., 2021]. However, caution must be taken when using online platforms as issues surrounding confidentiality, data protection, and miscommunication issues in virtual interactions continue to cause heated debate in the mental health community. Ethical guidelines and standards struggle to keep pace with the rapid evolution of E-Therapy.
Looking to the not so distant future, E-Therapy has exciting prospects for the enhancement of therapeutic experiences through the integration of artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and innovative technologies.
