Family-centred research on the aetiology of schizophrenia in the 1950s sparked a growing interest in understanding the impact family dynamics have on mental health. From this, pioneers of family-centred approaches such as Murray Bowen, Virginia Satir, and Salvador Minuchin developed theories to understand and treat family issues. With the introduction of cybernetics, systems, and communication theories a more in depth understanding of the complexities of family interactions and their impact on mental health began to develop. Family centred approaches challenged the long-standing psychoanalytic theories of mental health, asserting that troubled family relationships, rather than intrapsychic processes, were the primary causes of mental illness. [Rasheed et al., 2010]
Bowen’s Family Systems Theory has been one of the leading theoretical approaches in understanding the impact of family dynamics, proposing that individuals cannot be understood in isolation from their family context [Calatrava et al., 2022]. This theory emphasises family dynamics, patterns of communication, and the impact of multigenerational relationships on individual behaviour.
Studies have shown that family stress is strongly associated with mental health difficulties, with communication failures and domestic violence being among the strongest predictors of adverse mental health outcomes [Lavira et al., 2023]. Beyond the environmental aspects of family dynamics, genetic factors contribute significantly to mental health disorders within families. Conditions like bipolar disorder, depression, and schizophrenia tend to run in families, highlighting the interplay of both environmental and genetic influences [National Institutes of Health, 2013]

Our clinical research and application model seamlessly integrates conceptual, theoretical, and clinical research to inform best practice guidelines in the field of family psychology. Through our multidisciplinary approach incorporating neuroscience, neuropsychology, and the natural sciences we expand the horizons of clinical research and application. Drawing inspiration from the world or art, we also understand the importance creativity can have in understanding and improving family dynamics.
