Removing one’s self from the demands and stresses of daily life to focus on self-reflection, contemplation, and personal growth has ancient origins. But, specific purpose-built centres which aim to improve mind and body wellbeing have developed in recent years from a background of foreign travel to hot springs, sacred sites, and pilgrimage locations [Naidoo et al., 2018]. Psychologists such as Carl Rogers emphasise the importance of personal growth and self awareness, and many retreat-based interventions in psychology follow this [Joseph, 2021]. Using mindfulness-based approaches, retreats have been shown to effectively alleviate anxiety, depression, psychosis, and physical pain [Razzaque & Wood, 2016]. Most recently, development of online wellness programmes has become popular in response to some of the cost-related difficulties associated with retreats. These follow traditional approaches used in retreat-based therapy, but are more accessible to a wide range of individuals
Retreats have been used to treat a wide range of mental health disorders that range from mild to complex in nature, most typically stress-related disorders. Systematic reviews have consistently shown that retreats are effective in reducing cognitive and emotional reactivity [Khoury et al., 2017].
